Our Story
Our City is in many ways, a new place even though it was founded over 200 years ago. San Jose exhibits the rich culture of Spain and Mexico and is home to a vast number of immigrants from all over the world who have built their homes and their future here. We are home to one of Spanish California’s oldest structures and the last of an original settlement, the Peralta Adobe. Built in 1797 by Manuel Gonzalez, an Apache, it is the last remaining structure from El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe and was the long time home of Luis Maria Peralta. It is now the heart and soul of the San Pedro Square Market.
San Pedro Square began a new era with restaurants and bars, such as the Tower Saloon and The Old Spaghetti Factory, opening in 1972. Now, SPS Market is your local food hall with a mix of local artisan restaurants and food-oriented boutiques offering a diverse assortment of cuisines from around the world all under our three roofs. The Three Sisters Hall in the Perazzo Building celebrates the assimilation and union that makes this City special with the honoring of the three Castro-Fallon children and the strength of that merger of the many peoples who came here.
We are Downtown San Jose’s meeting place for foodies, music lovers, coffee perfection fans, tourists, barbershop hunters, social media followers and wine & beer imbibers. The Market is the best place to hang out with the open-air Plaza, sidewalk cafe or inside one of the three exclusive interior spaces.
This vibrant public market features everything from Peruvian ceviche to Korean short ribs and beyond – the culinary choices are truly endless. The Peralta Adobe Plaza provides outdoor seating where you can enjoy a morning coffee, a tasty lunch, or an evening dinner and cocktails with nightly music and entertainment. There is something for everyone.
We here at the Market work closely with the talented people at History San Jose (HSJ), Silicon Valley’s largest and most notable historical organization. Their mission is to collect, preserve and celebrate the stories of diversity and innovation in San José and the Santa Clara Valley. We also offer tours of the Peralta Adobe and Thomas and Carmel Castro Fallon House across the street. It and its lively Garden will be a great spot to drink your morning coffee with tours on weekends or by special arrangement. It will take you back to life in the distant past still alive in the heart of downtown San Jose.
Please come see for yourself the rich history, culture and community here at San Pedro Square Market. We look forward to welcoming you to “your” market!
